For many participants, umpiring with Welland Minor Baseball is their first “real” job. Umpires play a key role in creating a positive and enjoyable baseball experience for players and families. Responsibilities include:
Arriving on time and taking charge of games in a professional manner
Creating a safe, fun, and respectful environment for youth players
Learning, interpreting, and enforcing the rules of baseball
Making quick decisions and confidently standing by those decisions
Balancing umpiring with school, baseball, and other commitments
Keeping track of games officiated and managing a schedule
Individuals interested in the Welland Minor Baseball Umpire Program should meet the following criteria:
Age Requirement: Umpires for the 2026 season must be born in 2014 or earlier
Baseball Experience: Previous playing experience is an asset but not required
Certification: All umpires must be certified through Baseball Ontario and attend an annual clinic
Welland Minor Baseball plans to host a local Baseball Ontario clinic in spring 2026, with additional clinic options available through Baseball Ontario. Space is limited, so early expressions of interest are encouraged.
More details about registration and next steps will be shared closer to the camp date. If you are interested in umpiring, this is a great opportunity to learn more and get involved.
